A search which looks for concepts which lie between and hence connect “optimisation” and “crystal structure” may turn up previously unknown concepts such as “genetic algorithms” or “space groups” which would be very difficult to find via conventional approaches to search which assume that the user has a good understanding of what terms to search for.We are talking to:For more information, please visit:

Clink – Interview: Stephen Remde http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/2009/09/04/interview-stephen-remde-clink/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=interview-stephen-remde-clink http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/2009/09/04/interview-stephen-remde-clink/#comments Fri, 04 Sep 2009 10:00:47 +0000 devcsi-team http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/demonstrator/?p=215 Stephen Remde from the University of Bradford talks about ClinkClink stands for: Concept linkage in knowledge repositories. It’s a system to help you search – when you don’t know what you are searching for. What is Clink?Clink is about exploring searches more visually and trying to find out information when you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for. Everyone’s been in a situation when they’re looking for something and don’t know what it’s called or what to put into a search engine. So we’re looking at ways of finding paths between the bits you do know, so you can see if those are interesting and lead you the right way…What problems/issues is Clink tackling? The problem of searching when you don’t know specifically what you are looking for. Or say when you’ve heard of a new concept or idea or don’t know where to start looking. This will help you explore and visually see the links between ideas, so you can form an opinion on which are the important bits and lead on from there…How would you like other software developers and users to get involved in what you are doing? At the moment we’re using wikipedia as a nice clean easy to use database. But it would be great to use other databases, like citation indexes and similar. What developer communities have you been involved in and if none, why not?Just the JISC projects really and we’re working with the National Media Museum who will be doing focus groups with the software we produce. We have a blog and it’s open source as well. What is the coolest or most exciting thing in educational software development?JISCRI!A useful link to a Clink demonstrator video
