Easihe – Interview: Bart Nagel and Pei Zhang http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/2009/09/04/easihe-interview-bart-nagel-and-pei-zhang/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=easihe-interview-bart-nagel-and-pei-zhang http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/2009/09/04/easihe-interview-bart-nagel-and-pei-zhang/#comments Fri, 04 Sep 2009 12:01:20 +0000 kirsty-pitkin http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/demonstrator/?p=167

Bart Nagel and Pei Zhang are based at the University of Southampton and are working together on a project called Easihe…

What is Easihe?

Easihe is to produce an open source e-assessment repository, where lectures can store their quizzes etc using the QTI 2.1 format, and also a platform for delivering those assessments. We also want to have a peer assessment feature so that learners can get formative feedback so it can be used more as a learning tool than for exams.

What problems/issues is Easihe tackling?

There are no good authoring tools for QTI. The main tool for creating electronic assessments is Question Mark’s Perception, which only outputs in the old version of QTI and causes lots of headaches, so we don’t want to have our end users jumping through those hoops. We are also struggling with the documentation from other JISC projects that we are using to put this project together.

How would you like other software developers and users to get involved in what you are doing?

We have a few schools on the list for testing and trials, but we don’t need so much testing at this stage, but maybe later. However, getting discussion within the community over the new QTI 2.1 spec, particularly getting Android to work with it for mobile applications of Easihe.

What developer communities have you been involved in and if none, why not?

Apart from visiting developer sites to get answers to particular questions, not really. We don’t find it difficult to find other developers to talk to, so joining a particular community hasn’t been a priority.

What is the coolest or most exciting thing in educational software development?

The co-design process with users to help build more useful software. We are also interested in the SYNOTE project, which allows lectures to be recorded, and viewers can comment via Twitter, which then gets added to the video so when you play back you can see the comments of other students.
