ICEIFace – Interview: Chris Banks and Seb Richards http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/2009/09/05/interview-chris-banks-and-seb-richards-iceiface/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=interview-chris-banks-and-seb-richards-iceiface http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/2009/09/05/interview-chris-banks-and-seb-richards-iceiface/#comments Sat, 05 Sep 2009 11:01:40 +0000 michelle-pauli http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/demonstrator/?p=236 Chris Banks and Seb Richards, developers at the University of Manchester, talk about ICEIFace, a new user interfaceWhat is ICEIFace? It aims to provide an easy-to-use interface to aid the curriculum review process, looking towards more generic solutions elsewhere. What problems/issues is ICEIFace tackling? The medical school have been tasked with redesigning their curriculum in a short space of time so they were looking for a tool to aid them in this process. A previous project, Cramporn, mapped out the curriculum in a knowledge base so the idea behind ICEIFace was to present a nice user interface to this and a simple metaphor for querying this knowledge base. How would you like other software developers and users to get involved in what you are doing? We had a few workshops with the end users, in this case the administration medical bods where we presented them with different scenarios and we used their feedback to decided where to go to next. We took on the metaphor that each of the curriculum elements were like airports with the relations like flight paths and we built it round this idea. What developer communities have you been involved in and if none, why not?Chris: I’ve been involved with the JISC developer community for a while.Seb: I’ve only just started so not yet had the need to branch out but this meeting is the first in some upcoming participation in community stuff. What is the coolest or most exciting thing in educational software development?Seb: there is a lot of use of ontologies, the semantic web which is the future of a lot of things to do with the collation of data which is very relevant to the educational sector.Chris: the idea of knoweldge-based visualisation and things like we’re developing, novel ways of querying this compex data.
