Mobile Campus Assistant – Interview: Jasper Treadgold http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/2009/09/04/interview-jasper-treadgold-mobile-campus-assistant/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=interview-jasper-treadgold-mobile-campus-assistant http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/2009/09/04/interview-jasper-treadgold-mobile-campus-assistant/#comments Fri, 04 Sep 2009 10:29:05 +0000 devcsi-team http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/demonstrator/?p=220 Jasper Treadgold from the University of Bristol talks about Mobile Campus AssistantA neat way of helping students get information they need about where they are going, what to do when they get there, when to do it and similar…What is Mobile Campus Assistant? There’s a lot of data that students might want to get hold of while moving about campus – like maps, and information on the day’s events and where things are. This project is about getting this data to them while they’re on the move around campus. For example it could tell a student where the nearest free PC might be. Or it can tell them bus times and the location of bus stops and tell them the closest bus back to the Halls Of Residence. What problems/issues is it tackling? It’s a collection of problems. It gives you a framework to link already existing data and link it with location aware technology – it solves a lot of small problems students might have. How would you like other software developers and users to get involved in what you are doing? The aim is to provide something not tied to our university. The data is specific, but we hope developers on other campuses can use it and tweak it too. I imagine a lot of universities would like to be able to offer a similar service. What developer communities have you been involved in and if none, why not?The other JISC Rapid Innovation projects using geo-location technologies, like walking through history. What is the coolest or most exciting thing in educational software development? The thing that strikes me as having the most potential is the Link Data stuff. It’s hard to say it’s cool! But it will solve a raft of problems. It feels like a real solid data platform too.
