Mentor – Interview: George Vernon http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/2009/09/04/mentor-interview-george-vernon/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=mentor-interview-george-vernon http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/2009/09/04/mentor-interview-george-vernon/#comments Fri, 04 Sep 2009 12:02:17 +0000 kirsty-pitkin http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/demonstrator/?p=177

George Vernon is based at the University of Plymouth and is currently working on a Mentoring database project…

What is Mentor?

Mentor is a system for organising mentor and mentee contracts within a university, from the initial enquiry: “do I need a mentor?” to managing the contract and organising the meetings taking place.

What problems/issues is Mentor tackling?

The database bit – which is a bit like a kind of match.com system – has to be secure and give confidence for the user.  From the more developmental point of view, we need to be able to collect the statistics about how many people are using the system in what ways, so that it can become part of a much larger virtual enquiries system.

How would you like other software developers and users to get involved in what you are doing?

Its more the planning and the architecture of it – so its a case of getting the users involved so that it is easy for them to use and flexible as mentoring is a personal process.

What developer communities have you been involved in and if none, why not?

I went to the Dev8D event, and the ACCU events.

What is the coolest or most exciting thing in educational software development?

Its got to be Ruby for me.  I am a big believer in that you have to move on, so you have to make the time to learn new technologies to take advantage of the new features they make available.  I am currently reading about MERB which offers improvements to Rails.
