OneVRE – Interview: Tobias Schiebeck http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/2009/09/04/onevre-interview-tobias-schiebeck/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=onevre-interview-tobias-schiebeck http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/2009/09/04/onevre-interview-tobias-schiebeck/#comments Fri, 04 Sep 2009 12:01:44 +0000 kirsty-pitkin http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/demonstrator/?p=171

Tobias Schiebeck is based at the University of Manchester and is working on the OneVRE project…

What is OneVRE?

OneVRE to join them all is a project to join different research workspaces, which can be located in different administrative domains, allowing you to exchange data.  The researcher now usually works with different people, but no institution trusts the researchers from other institutions, so each project has to set up a dedicated workspace, and the researcher ends up with a multitude of workspaces for all of their collaborations.  This project aims to connect these workspaces so everyone can exchange data, without the maintenance of all these separate workspaces.

What problems/issues is OneVRE tackling?

We are in month 4 of a 2 year project, so we are still in the early stages.  The main issue at the moment is the security aspect and the communication issues associated with this type of system.

How would you like other software developers and users to get involved in what you are doing?

I would like to get feedback about the security issues.  We have a user-engagement person on the project and a user group, so we will be getting users involved as the project progresses.

What developer communities have you been involved in and if none, why not?

I have been involved in the Access Grid community, which is a worldwide community for high performance video, and the JISC VRE community.

What is the coolest or most exciting thing in educational software development?

There were quite a few really interesting projects pitched yesterday, so there are a variety of exciting things around at the moment.
