SpACE – Interview: Stephen Vickers http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/2009/09/04/space-interview-stephen-vickers/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=space-interview-stephen-vickers http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/2009/09/04/space-interview-stephen-vickers/#comments Fri, 04 Sep 2009 12:02:26 +0000 kirsty-pitkin http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/demonstrator/?p=179

Steven Vickers is based at the University of Edinburgh and is currently working on the SpACE tool project…

What is SpACE?

SpACE is a tool that allows users to associate content with areas on a map.  The content can be images, text, links to other web resources etc.  The content can be sequenced so that it creates a tour of a particular city.  It is an easy to use editing tool for students to create resources to demonstrate their understanding of the theory, and can be used as an assessment tool.

What problems/issues is SpACE tackling?

The current focus is looking at how we can extend it to other types of subject areas.  The maps can be replaced with historical data or high resolution images so we want to do examples of those.  We also want to have groups collaborating on a map as a group activity.  We are now developing it to be independent of the VLE, so we can have students from different learning environments to collaborate.

How would you like other software developers and users to get involved in what you are doing?

We are always short of resources on the graphic design, page layout, skinning side of the tool.  We are also always looking for tools to combine with SpACE.  We also want to look at ways of getting data in from a mobile device so there are a lot of opportunities to explore!

What developer communities have you been involved in and if none, why not?

My main involvement has been in Blackboard, but I have also been involved in OSCELOT.

What is the coolest or most exciting thing in educational software development?

LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) is my coolest thing at the moment – the ability to write a tool that is platform independent and gives the students from different platforms to work together.
