Writeslike.us – Interview: Alexey Strenlinkov http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/2009/09/04/interview-alexey-strenlinkov-and-emma-tonkin-writeslikeus/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=interview-alexey-strenlinkov-and-emma-tonkin-writeslikeus http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/2009/09/04/interview-alexey-strenlinkov-and-emma-tonkin-writeslikeus/#comments Fri, 04 Sep 2009 10:11:43 +0000 devcsi-team http://devcsi.ukoln.ac.uk/demonstrator/?p=217 Alexey Strenlinkov from UKOLN talks about writeslike.usA device that helps users find and link up with academic researchersWhat is writeslike.us?A system that will you allow you to find researchers within a research community and people with interests in specific areas. Or if you know one person’s name to help you find another who researches in a similar area. What problems/issues is it tackling?Uncertainty. There is no certain data about anything. And what to do if there are two researchers with the same name? And what happens if someone changes their name? The system is based on guessing, so without a proper data set it could be imprecise. But we are going to have data from lots of different sources and we can extract keywords and references from that. How would you like other software developers and users to get involved in what you are doing? We are trying to make the system easily extendible with additional data sets – like social networks and blogs. It would be good to be able to involve other data to link researchers. And other people could write additional models to make the system more precise and add different functionality. What developer communities have you been involved in and if none, why not?JISCRI would be the main one. UKOLN itself has a community of developers. We have partners in Mihno in Portugal. What is the coolest or most exciting thing in educational software development? In this conference I found a couple of applications solving similar problems to us. Like Names. It’s such a complex problem it’s really interesting to see people to come at it from other angles.
